About Us: News MIDnet & The Quilt Lead Panel on R&E Network's BTOP Proposals at Internet2 Member Meeting LINCOLN, Neb, April 28, 2010 – MIDnet and The Quilt led a national panel discussion on the impact of successful BTOP proposals on research and education networks at the Fall Internet2 Member Meeting in Arlington, VA. The Quilt and MIDnet have been collaborating on a project to promote further understanding of Regional Optical Networks (RONs) and the vital role they play within a region and/or state. While economic development is not a primary mission for all RONs, it is often a positive by-product of the presence of an advanced R&E network in a geographic area. In 2009, the NTIA & RUS announced $7.2 billion in federal stimulus funding for broadband infrastructure projects that stimulate broadband, economic growth and job creation. The second round of funding in particular was focused on projects that build middle mile broadband infrastructure to serve community anchor institutions and create “comprehensive community infrastructure”. Serving community anchor institutions is the keystone of the RON’s and these networks were very active in the creation of proposals for funding. The session will gave an overview of the participation of regional and state networks in the NTIA & RUS programs and included presentations from Merit, MCNC, and KINBER, which are involved in funded proposals to extend middle mile infrastructure in their regions and will include estimates of the economic impact of the projects. This was the sixth Internet2 presentation on research and education networks. For more information on the presentation, visit: www.internet2.edu. About The Project The project is a collaborative effort with The Quilt to collect data on the impact and reach of USA research and education networks. About The Quilt The Quilt gathers more than 24 leading research and education networking organizations in the United States to promote consistent, reliable, interoperable and efficient advanced networking services that extend to the broadest possible community; and to represent common interests in the development and delivery of advanced network services. Participants in The Quilt provide network service for more than 200 Internet2 universities and thousands of other educational institutions. Internet2, a university-led research and development consortium, provides organizational support for The Quilt. For more information, see: www.thequilt.net ###
