About Us: News MIDnet/The Quilt Economic Impact Case Studies Presented at Internet2 Member Meeting LINCOLN, Neb, October 8, 2009 – MIDnet and The Quilt led a national panel discussion on the economic impact of research and education networks at the Fall Internet2 Member Meeting in San Antonio, Texas. The Quilt and MIDnet have been collaborating on a project to promote further understanding of Regional Optical Networks (RONs) and the vital role they play in economic development in a region and/or state. For many RONs, economic development is not a primary mission, but often it is a positive by-product of the presence of an advanced R&E network in a geographic area. In March 2009, we began to collect economic development success stories of RONs and their participants. The goal of the project is to capture and publish these stories in a format that educates and promotes further investment, collaboration and cooperation in the networks. The panel gave an overview of the project and included examples from specific case studies at OneNet, and the Albuquerque GigaPop. Carol Farnham of Signa Solutions represented MIDnet, Inc.
