About Us: News MIDnet Announces Award for Advanced-Network ConferenceLINCOLN, Neb, February 26, 2002 MIDnet, Inc. is pleased to announce it has awarded the first round of funding of a new grant program for the development of network-related tools, conferences, training and research. The Great Plains Network (GPN), Lawrence, Kan., has received funding to develop a conference on advanced networking to be held April 18-19, 2002 at the EROS Data Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. MIDnet is pleased to be able to support regional efforts in network training, education, and research. The conference proposed by GPN is an excellent way to advance MIDnets goals in this area, stated Chairman J.L. Albert. Rick Summerhill, Executive Director for the Great Plains Network stated, "GPN is extremely excited about the opportunity to assist MIDnet in serving its mission of regional network education and information exchange. GPN and MIDnet have similar histories so we understand the needs of MIDnet's membership and will provide a quality and educational conference." In 1987, MIDnet became the first of the regional networks (the pre-cursor to todays Internet) to become fully operational. MIDnets original focus was to create a network for accessing and exchanging information. Throughout its history, information exchange continued to be a major focus. MIDnet moved from a university-based organization to non-profit status in 1992. Two years later, MIDnet was acquired by a California start-up. The board of directors of MIDnet reorganized and has reestablished MIDnet as a quality provider of network education and information exchange. The Great Plains Network is a consortium of Great Plains states dedicated to supporting research and education through the use of advanced networking technology. Assisted by the National Science Foundation EPSCoR program and coordinated by principal investigator Jerry Niebaum, the consortium has constructed a high speed network connecting the educational state networks in the following states: Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Oklahoma ###
